This is a Review and Comparison of the Palm Pre

So what’s the big deal with the Palm Pre? This has been a long time coming. Developers have been talking about a hassle free linux based palm phone since 2004.

The matter of the palm pre being a step above or the future of the IPhone concerning user friendliness and compatibility is what seems to be a majority of the reason for the hype over this phone (other than the fact that it’s the brand spanking new piece of cellular equipment on the market).

Design

Palm Pre Flat

The Palm Pre feels better than an I-Phone! Although it is thicker around the middle with a waist measured at 0.67 inches, it is completely manageable especially when compared to the tall and wide I-Phone. The Palm Pre is sleek yet practical. The design is modernly simplistic yet stunning (which makes you wonder how simple it really is). The top side hosts the power button, ringer on/off swtich, and a full sized headphone jack.

Multi Touch

Touch

The palm pre, unlike the I-Phone, makes for some impressive multi touch maneuvers such as bringing up and moving the shortcuts bar which is displayed in the above image.

Operating

Unlike most palm pilots, the Palm Pre runs on linux which allows for multi tasking minus the delay of loading which you would get with most windows OS’s. Also, the Palm Pre allows you to display all open apps and programs which can be brought up with ease by a simple touch.

Touch Screen AND Slide down full Qwerty Keyboard

Keyboard Open

What makes this touch phone even more satisfying to customers is the option to bring down the Qwerty pad. This drop down keyboard is neither bulky or inconvenient. It is highly satisfying for the individuals who enjoy the touch screen for app functionality, but prefer click buttons for typing. The slide down keyboard at first may seem to get stuck in the early stage of sliding, this is due to a divot in the hardware and is nothing to be worried about. After a bit of use the feel for the slide becomes second nature and functions well. When closing the keyboard there seems to be no click to ensure that it is locked into place but really, it is. With the keyboard out the phone takes a more curved shape like a banana. The keyboard and screen adjust on the same angle and when fully extended reaches a height just taller than the I-Phone and of course Blackberry tour. This angles the screen slightly more towards your face when typing on a flat surface. On the backside there is a mirror which is exposed when the keyboard is pulled down.

Pre Laying Down

Camera

The Palm Pre is equipped with a 3.2 mega pixel camera with flash which competes with the quality of the Blackberry Tour camera. The I-Phone falls over 2 thirds short concerning megapixels with a 2 mega pixel camera.

Camera

The phone OS has made it so the image processing is backloaded when taking pictures. This means that you are able to take pictures without having to wait through the awful shutter lag time which you’re probably used to with other phone cameras. Go figure, the camera phone can actually be used like a camera.

Email and Messaging

For ease of access, the Palm Pre combines all email, messaging, and social networking inbox’s and updates into a single attainable application. Flipping through each app and inbox on the I-Phone can take a couple minutes longer. For the first little bit, the difference between the Palm Pre and the I-Phone on this front would not be a big deal, but for the daily user the difference can be a big deal.

Calendar and Contacts

Palm Upright

The Palm Pre like the new Blackberry models imports all calendars into one and like an accordion compresses unlabelled time slots (aka free time) so that important times can be viewed with ease and without having to scroll.

Audio

The sound on the ear piece does not disappoint and unlike the I-Phone the speaker phone quality and pickup will do wonders for the people you are talking to considering they probably won’t even beable to tell that you are not attached to the phone at the ear. The sound out of the earpiece is clear with emphasis in the mid range frequencies which is like almost any phone.

MP3 Capabilities

For the music lover used to the i-pod, one may wonder how to get by with the Palm Pre. Well the Pre comes with Amazon MP3 store built in which is a decent alternative.

Second savers

Search

The palm pre also allows you to Google without opening a browser. It is equipped with a universal search. If you start typing on the homepage of your cell phone the Pre automatically starts searching and matching up your live query with a list of apps on your phone and also with google, google maps, twitter, wikipedia, etc.

Web Browser

Like the Apple I-Phone, the Palm Pre Browser uses the Webkit foundation making it very quick. That is all.

Conclusion

It is not the only phone out there that is able to compete with the Apple I-Phone, but it definitely is the best to do so. I would even say that it is better than the I-Phone in some respects, and depending on how much you value certain things on your phone, you may feel the same way.
